(Eagle News) — Former U.S. President Donald Trump won’t go ahead with a planned news conference on the one-year anniversary of the Jan. 6 riot at the U.S. Capitol.

“In light of the total bias and dishonesty of the January 6th Unselect Committee of Democrats, two failed Republicans, and the Fake News Media, I am canceling the January 6th Press Conference at Mar-a-Lago on Thursday,” Trump said in a statement Tuesday.

Instead, he says he will discuss what he describes as important topics at a rally planned for Jan. 15 in Arizona.

“It will be a big crowd,” he said in his statement.

Trump was expected to defend his supporters who rioted and stormed the Capitol a year ago, in a bid to overturn his loss to President Joe Biden.

The world watched in horror last January as hundreds of people stormed the Capitol, endangering the lives of lawmakers in the building.

At one point, they chanted “hang Mike Pence” after then-Vice President Mike Pence refused to challenge Electoral College election results.

Trump has persisted with his lie that the 2020 presidential election was fraudulent and he was robbed of victory.

The cancellation of Thursday’s news conference has been greeted with relief by many in the Republican party who saw it as a distraction as they prepare for this fall’s mid-term elections.
