(Eagle News) — Prime Minister Justin Trudeau has condemned the assassination of Haitian President Jovenel Moise.

“I want to first express my utmost condemnation and horror at the assassination of President Jovenel Moise in Haiti,” Trudeau told a news conference in Calgary on Wednesday. “It is absolutely unacceptable and not something anyone wants to see anywhere in the world.”

Moise was gunned down early Wednesday when a group of men broke into his home. His wife was wounded and is recovering in hospital.

The country has had a number of difficult years, including 2010 when an earthquake devastated the nation.

Since then, Haiti has received $1.5 billion from the Canadian government in humanitarian assistance and development assistance.

Trudeau says Canada will continue to help the Caribbean country.

“Canada has been and will continue to be a close friend to the Haitian people, there to support, there to help there to partner,” he said. “Canada has continued to be there for them and we will continue into the coming difficult months to stand with the people of Haiti and move towards greater stability and greater opportunity for everyone.”
