Tennis star Roger Federer announces retirement

(Eagle News) — Swiss tennis superstar Roger Federer took to social media to announce his retirement from his professional tennis career that stretched for more than 24 years.

“The Laver Cup next week in London will be my final ATP event,” Federer posted on his Twitter account Thursday morning.

The 41-year-old has played more than 1500 matches in his career and has won 20 Grand Slam titles.

Recently, injuries have kept him off the court as He underwent his third knee surgery in just 18 months. His last tournament was in 2021 where he lost in the quarterfinals at Wimbledon.

“I’ve worked hard to return to full competitive form,” he said. “But I also know my body’s capacities and limits, and its message to me lately has been clear.”

At the end of his tweet, Federer assured his fans his feeling for the sport would not fade.

“Finally, to the game of tennis: I love you and will never leave you,” he said.
