(Eagle News) — A majority of Americans and Canadians will likely take a staycation this summer rather than travel extensively, according to a poll by Leger Opinions released Saturday.

Only 41 per cent of Americans and 31 percent of Canadians polled indicated they are likely to take a summer vacations.

And of those who do decided to go somewhere, the trip will be a short one.

Fifty-six per cent of Americans and 63 per cent of Canadians say traveling will be limited to day trips locally where they live.

How do Canadians and Americans feel about visiting each others’ countries?

About one-third (32%) of Americans say they would not feel comfortable crossing the border into Canada.

Nearly six in 10 (57%) Canadians feel the same way about going south to the U-S.

As a matter of fact, 57 percent say it will likely be next year before they feel comfortable traveling again in the U-S.

And international travel – not on the minds of many. Only 10 percent in eith country would consider an international destination.

What about taking a cruise?

Twenty percent of Canadians and 30 percent of Americans say they would be comfortable doing that.

So there appears to be a bit of sunshine in that poll for the travel industry.

But it looks like it is going to be another year before vacations and travel really take off.

The poll sampled 1,529 Canadians and 1,003 Americans, over the age of 18 from May 7th, 2021 to May 9th, 2021. A probability sample of this size would have a margin of error ±2.51%, 19 times out of 20 for the Canadian sample and of ±3.09%, 19 times out of 20 for the American sample.
