(Eagle News) — Police in Lansing, Michigan have identified the gunman who went on a shooting rampage Monday evening at Michigan State University, killing three people.

He has been identified as 43-year-old Anthony Wayne McRae.

“We can confirm that the 43-year-old suspect had no affiliation to the university,” said Chris Rozman, interim deputy chief of the university police department.

“He was not a student, faculty, staff, current or previous,” Rozman told a news conference Tuesday.

The motive remains a mystery.

“I know everybody wants to know what the motive is — we don’t have an answer right now,” he said.

Police searched a home connected to McRae but would not comment on what was found there.

Officers found McRae after a three-hour manhunt.

He died of a self-inflicted gunshot wound.

Five other people suffered gunshot wounds. Four of them underwent surgery. All remain in critical conditions.

All of those shot were students at the university.

The shootings began Monday evening shortly after 8:00 p.m. local time and took place in two different buildings, said Rozman.

Multiple calls were made to the 911 emergency line.

Hundreds of state, local and federal law enforcement officers responded to the scene.

Students and anyone else on campus were urged to shelter in place while police launched a dragnet to capture the gunman.

Students fled from campus buildings to seek refuge.

The university has canceled classes until Monday.

There have been nearly 70 mass shootings in the U.S. since the beginning of the year.
