(Eagle News) — Organizers of a protest against COVID-19 public health restrictions that has gone on for a week now in Ottawa have lost the support o GofundMe.

The crowdfunding site pulled the plug on the Freedom Convoys fundraiser Friday saying the protest has become an occupation.

“We now have evidence from law enforcement that the previously peaceful demonstration has become an occupation, with police reports of violence and other unlawful activity,” GoFundMe said in a statement. “This fundraiser is now in violation of our Terms of Service”

The fundraiser, which has pulled in more than CA$10 million from donors, has been removed from the platform.

GoFundMe has set up a link for donors who want a refund. They have until Feb. 19, 2022 to request one.

So far, CA$1 million has been given to the organizers.

“No further funds will be directly distributed to the Freedom Convoy organizers,” GoFundMe said.

The fundraising campaign was started last month to help with the cost of fuel, food and other expenses for truckers who made the trek to Ottawa.

There has been some concern about where the money was coming from.

Organizer Tamara Lich has moved her fundraising efforts to another platform called GiveSendGo.
