NEW WESTMINSTER (Eagle News) — Fire has broken out at the New Westminster Park Pier Sunday evening, with black smoke billowing across the Fraser river.

New Westminster Mayor Jonathan Cote calls the fire “devastating” according to his Twitter feed.

“The fire is being contained to the old part of the pier, but it is likely the old pier of the park will be completely destroyed” he writes.

“At this time the cause is not known. It is not believed anyone was caught in this fire” he adds.

The iconic pier, right under the Pattullo bridge in New Westminster, British Columbia, is known for its long boardwalk and it’s distinctive “W” sign along the waterfront.
