(Eagle News) — The B.C. Coroners Service confirmed Sunday two deaths in the wildfire that destroyed the village of Lytton earlier this week.

In a statement, the service says the bodies of two people have been recovered.

Investigators had been unable to enter the village until yesterday because of toxic smoke.

More than 1,000 people were driven out of the area by the blaze Wednesday night.

A number of people remain unaccounted for.

But officials say that may be because of the quick evacuation of the village.

Many people have not registered with emergency evacuation centers.

Brad Vis, the member of Parliament for the area, says the flames have destroyed 90% of the community.

Lytton recorded a record temperature of 49.5 C (121 F) last week.
