Canadians to elect new government Monday

(Eagle News) — Canadians go to the polls Monday to elect a new government in an election which many say was unnecessary.

Prime Minister Justin Trudeau called the election two years earlier than required, saying Canada is at a critical juncture and Canadians should have a say on the future.

Trudeau has been governing for two years with a minority government.

Opposition parties contend Trudeau called the election because his standings in the public opinion polls had improved enough to give him a majority government.

They say the election was unnecessary because they were prepared to continue propping up his minority.

But Trudeau’s gamble might not pay off though.

Public opinion polls conducted throughout the campaign show a majority of Canadians agree the election was unnecessary.

Many are angry with Trudeau and his Liberal Party.

The two main political parties — Trudeau’s Liberals and the Conservatives, led by Erin O’Toole — are in a dead heat going into Monday’s vote.

Three other parties trail far behind.

That will likely mean whoever forms government will be in a minority situation again.

The key to victory will be determined on how successful the parties are at getting their supporters to vote.
