(Eagle News) — People who continue to protest lockdowns and other public health measures are hurting their own cause, Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau said Tuesday.

“Unfortunately some people are still choosing to join large gatherings or even go out of their way to protest public health measures and disrupt vaccine appointments,” said Trudeau. ““These protests are supposed to be getting back to normal but by spreading the virus they do just the opposite and prolong lockdowns.”

Many parts of Canada face record numbers of new cases of Covid-19 as the third wave of the pandemic sweeps across the country.

On the weekend, thousands gathered in Central Alberta for a two-day “No More Lockdowns” rodeo.

The event was a clear violation of Alberta’s public health measures which limit outdoor gatherings to no more than 10 people.

A week earlier, thousands protested lockdowns at a mass vaccination site in Montreal, Quebec, forcing officials to close the facility and reschedule appointments.

Trudeau thanked Canadians who adhere to the rules and had this message for protesters.

“Follow public health advice, but don’t do it for me or any politician,” he said. “Do it for someone in your life you care about, do it because you respect your fellow Canadians.”
