(Eagle News) — Canada is joining other NATO allies by sending CA$7.8 million of lethal military weapons to Ukraine.

“The intent of this support from Canada and other partners is to deter further Russian aggression.” Prime Minister Justin Trudeau said Monday.

As well, the government will loan Ukraine CA$500 million in addition to a CA$120 million loan made last month.

“It’s important for Canadians and the world to know that Canada will continue supporting Ukraine and its independence, integrity and sovereignty, including its right to defend itself,” said Trudeau.

As Russian troops continue to assemble on Ukraine’s border, the country has been asking western allies for lethal weapons.

More than 100,000 Russian soldiers have been staged near the border.

Russia continues to deny it plans to invade Ukraine.

Russian President Vladimir Putin wants Ukraine to be barrd from becoming a member of NATO.
