(Eagle News) — Prime Minister Justin Trudeau has appointed an Indigenous leader as Canada’s new governor-general.

“I am very pleased to announce that Her Majesty The Queen has graciously approved the appointment of Mary Simon as the next Governor General of Canada,” Trudeau said Tuesday in a release.

For the last four decades, Simon has been an advocate for Inuit rights and culture as well as the rights of all Indigenous peoples.

The Inuit are the Indigenous people of Canada’s arctic regions.

“Ms. Simon has dedicated her life to advancing social, economic, and human rights issues for Canadian Inuit and Indigenous peoples,” said Trudeau. “I am confident that she will serve Canadians and promote our shared values with dedication and integrity.”

Simon replaces Julie Payette who resigned five months ago after a report found that the workplace in her office was toxic.

Dozens of employees complained of mistreatment by Payette.

The governor-general’s role is largely ceremonial and serves as the Queen’s representative in Canada.

Responsibilities include carrying out constitutional duties, serving as commander-in-chief, representing Canada at home and abroad, encouraging excellence, and bringing Canadians together.
