At least one dead when gunman opens fire inside California church

(Eagle News) — One person is dead and five others are injured following a shooting inside a church in the Southern California community of Laguna Woods.

Four of the wounded are in critical condition the Orange County Sheriff’s office said Sunday on Twitter.

“All victims are adults and are enroute to the hospital. One victim is deceased at the scene,” the sheriff’s office tweeted.

The shooting happened about 1:30 p.m. this afternoon at the Geneva Presbyterian Church.

Police say they have detained one person at the scene and have recovered a weapon that may be involved.

Laguna Woods is a seniors’ community about 50 miles or 80 kilometers southeast of Los Angeles.

California Governor Gavin Newsom tweeted that he is closely monitoring the shooting and working closely with local police.

No one should have to fear going to their place of worship,” Newsom said on Twitter. “Our thoughts are with the victims, community, and all those impacted by this tragic event.”

This latest shooting comes just one day after a 18-year-old gunman shot up a grocery store in Buffalo, New York, killing 10 people.
