(Eagle News) — A police officer is dead and two others injured following a shooting in the Vancouver area in Western Canada.
Police had been trying to execute a search warrant on a residence in Coquitlam Friday morning when a man opened fire.
Fifty-one-year-old RCMP Cst. Rick O’Brien died at the scene.
“This is an extremely difficult and tragic day for the members of the Ridge Meadows Detachment, Coquitlam RCMP where the incident occurred, and the greater BC RCMP and RCMP family,” Deputy Commissioner Dwayne McDonald said in a statement.
One of the injured officers remains in hospital with non-life threatening injuries and the other has been treated and released, said McDonald.
The suspect is also in hospital with non-life threatening injuries.
O’Brien had just celebrated his seventh year of service with the Royal Canadian Mounted Police, said McDonald.
“Within months of starting though he was involved in the rescue of home invasion victims, which included a child and the arrest of armed suspects,” he said.
He leaves behind a wife and children.
