(Eagle News) — A teenage boy is responsible to killing two police officers in the western Canadian city of Edmonton, police said Friday.

The 16-year-old was apparently known to police but did not have a criminal record.

Thirty-five-year-old Constable Travis Jordan and 30-year-old Constable Brett Ryan responded to a call about a family dispute at an apartment where the boy lived with his mother and her male partner.

Upon arriving at the suite, both constables were shot multiple times and did not have a chance to respond.

“It has been confirmed that neither officer discharged their firearm,” police said in a statement.

Police say the boy and his 55-year-old mother struggled over the gun.

“The suspect shot his mother before turning the firearm on himself, taking his own life,” police said.

The boy died at the scene.

The lad’s 73-year-old father was not injured during the shootings.

Following 911 calls from several people, other officers arrived.

One of the injured officers was taken to hospital in a police vehicle.

An ambulance transported the other one.

Both were declared dead on arrival at hospital.

The boy’s mother remains in hospital in serious but stable condition.
