(Eagle News) — A gunman who killed three people at Michigan State University Monday evening in East Lansing, Michigan is dead.

“The suspect in this incident was located outside of the MSU campus and it does appear that that suspect has died from a self-inflected gunshot wound, said Chris Rozman, interim deputy chief of the university police department.

“There is no longer a threat to campus, Rozman told a midnight news conference. “We believe there to be only one shooter in this incident and there is no longer a need to shelter in place on campus.”

The three victims died at the scene.

Five other people were taken to hospital with gunshot wounds.

“Some of those five victims still have life-threatening injuries,” said Rozman.

None of the victims have been identified, nor did police say whether they were students.

Police have not released the gunman’s identity and have little information about him.

“We are unsure of any affiliation that the suspect had to the university,” said Rozman.

As far as a motive, there is no indication as to what prompted the shooting.

“We have absolutely no information right now on what the motive is and I can’t even begin to imagine what that motive would be,” Rozman said. “I know that that is going to be a question that lingers on everybody’s mind.

The shootings began shortly after 8:00 p.m. local time and took place in two different buildings, said Rozman.

Multiple calls were made to the 911 emergency line.

Hundreds of state, local and federal law enforcement officers responded to the scene.

Students and anyone else on campus were urged to shelter in place while police launched a dragnet to capture the gunman.

For now, all campus activities, including classes and sporting events are cancelled for the next two day, although that may change as the investigation proceeds.
