(Eagle News) — The B.C. Lions announced today that head coach DeVone Claybrooks has been relieved of his duties after posting an abysmal 5-13 record in the 2019 Canadian Football League (CFL) season.

Less than one calendar year after Claybrooks was named the 26th head coach in franchise history, Lions’ General Manager Ed Hervey announced to the media that Claybrooks would not continue on to the next season. Hervey stated the inexperience of the entire staff may have led to the poor season but did not exclude himself from the blame. He told media that he is as much responsible as anyone for the tough season.

Hervey told media that he wants someone who is already in the league who fully understands the CFL game and surrounds himself with people who knows the game in and out.

The Lions head into the offseason without a head coach after missing the playoffs. Hervey will have no more than a couple of months to find a replacement as preseason workouts are just around the corner in the new year.
